First of all, I want to thank you for your interest in my site.
Guests both old and new are always welcome around the Gathering Fire, and I hope you find joy and wonder here.
I am a Christian, saved by the grace of God alone, and pray that my endeavors here will bring glory and honor to Him. I am also a wife, piano teacher, writer, composer, and book lover (oh, and mother to a few nutty hermit crabs) with an avid interest in art, linguistics and astronomy.
I owe much of my love for the written word to my parents. My mother taught me to read by the time I was three years old, and I have been addicted to books ever since. Even before I could read or write, I was already making up stories which my mother (and dutiful scribe) hand recorded for me–tales of pumpkins and flowers and turkeys, all with their own personalities. As for my tastes, those can be traced largely back to my father, my fellow sci-fi and fantasy geek with a healthy appreciation for British and silly humor. Together we have enjoyed Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Monty Python, Mel Brooks films and many others.
Stories capture my imagination, touch my heart and spark my own creativity in a way few other things in this world do.
Not to be ignored or overshadowed is my second passion: Music.
While I have been making up stories since the time I was able to form coherent sentences, I practically came out of the womb singing. Even as a toddler, I knew the words to every Disney song and movie musical verbatim, and picked out melodies by ear on plastic toy pianos. And when my grandfather played classical music in the car (which was all the time), I would conduct it with gusto from the back seat.
Inside my head, there is always a song playing.
My primary instrument is piano, which I have played since age six, but I also play violin, guitar and ukulele, as well as a little clarinet, Irish whistle and frame drum.
Funnily enough, it was not until my college years that I really began to feel the serious urge to write both stories and music. But once I started, I discovered a love of sharing my creations with others that I never knew I had. My favorite authors and literary influences include, but are not limited to: J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, L. M. Montgomery and Jane Austen. It should come as no surprise by this point that I write mostly fantasy and fairy tales, although the occasional poem will come out of me.
I also continue to write music, with influences from folk, Celtic, classical, and new age primarily. I even have a YouTube channel now, which you should definitely check out when you’re done here, and don’t forget to subscribe! 😉
In conclusion, it seemed only fitting that this site reflect my inward being: the union of story and song. After all, what is music if not another form of storytelling? And what are stories, if not the symphonies of words?
Now I invite you, dear readers, to enter my world and share in the writing journey which I have undertaken. Things might get a little crazy, but just remember, “We’re all mad here.”
